APPENDIX TO the CHAPITRE VI
At the Moslems, where the polygamy is the rule ( ruler ? ), Koran formulates the same rule as the 1st paragraph of the 6th chapter.
« Every wife is entitled to God's part or minimum of periodically compulsory gallantry. »
An Arabic leader to whom I asked for news of his ( her;its ? ) health, complained not to be able to any more serve that once on night each of his four wives (he had crossed ( spent ? ) about fifty).
In India, the women are always handled softly.
The husbands send back ( dismiss ? ) his women, but do not beat them.
In Europe, it is generally the opposite which takes place, at least in the people.
There are even women of the people who love the energetic husbands. We know the song of Béranger: « Collin beats his ( her ? ) housewife » and Jules Barbier's verses on the girl of the suburbs who wants « a lover who the fouaille, for the evening till morning ».
The said Father Gury, moral Theology, 379: the husband is anxious to punish his wife when she ( it ? ) commits a fault, as soon as it is necessary to correct her ( it ? ) and prevent ( warn ? ) any scandal.
381. He usually has to use ( wear out ? ), by beginning, friendly words, and, if it is not enough, to have appeal to an austere punishment (it is, obviously, a remainder of the Middle Age there).
« The confessor does not have to add faith at once to the words of a woman who complains about her husband, because the women are usually worn to lie. »
We shall notice that nor P. Gury, nor the cathéchisme, do not speak about obedience owed by the woman to the husband, whereas the civil code prescribes her ( it ? ). Napoleon even insisted on this point to the council of State.
Condition of the women in India
The works of the women, in India, are always very sweet.
The very simple care of the household ( housework ? ) were filled ( performed ? ), their only activity ( occupation ? ) is to take off. All other sedentary works which, in Europe, are confided ( entrusted ? ) to the women, are, in India, executed by the men ( people ? ).
It is true that the women of the low classes work with the masons, the unskilled road workers, the farmers; but they are always very arranged, and fill ( perform ? ) only easy tasks.
Formerly, both sexes went bare, up to the belt, in all the South of the peninsula. This custom ( usage ? ) still exists on the rib ( coast ? ) of the Muscle man and in all the circonvoisins countries.
The linen piece which composes the clothing of the women of the Soudras covers just only what the chastity prevents from leaving openly.
The rich women take care of jewels and never deprive of it.
The women Hindus go out freely for their worships, their business ( cases ? ) and the needs of their house; for example, for quérir some water in the public fountains; and, although any intimacy with the men ( people ? ) is forbidden them, they can, nevertheless, without compromising, conversing with those who come in their house as knowledge and friends.
