CHAPTER I - Reports ( Connections ? ) of king with his women.

The wives of king live in the idleness, the luxury and the entertainments; we never give them anything to make of tiring ( getting tired ? ).

They assist the holidays ( name-days ? ), concerts, spectacles, are honorably handled there, and we offer them refreshments.

It is forbidden to them to go out only; and we let penetrate into the harem only into women who are perfectly known guards and keepers.

The women attached in the service of the women of the harem carry ( wear ? ) to king, every morning, flowers, lilies of the valley and clothes, presents of his wives. King donates it to these women, as well as objects of the same nature as he carried ( wore ? ) the day before.

In the afternoon, king adorned with all his ornaments, visits his wives, also adorned to receive him ( it ? ); he ( it ? ) returns to all honorings and assigns them their place, then he ( it ? ) engages ( opens ? ) with them a cheerful conversation.

Then, he ( it ? ) visits the virgins remarried widows, the common law wives and bayadères, each in his ( its ? ) room ( chamber ? ) (v. App.2).

When king ended his siesta, the lady of service in charge of indicating ( appointing ? ) him ( her ? ) the wife with whom he has to cross ( spend ? ) the night comes to find him ( it ? ), accompanied with the handmaids of the wife whose tour arrived and from those whose tour can have been crossed ( spent ? ) by mistake and because of indisposition.

These following ones present to king of essences and the flavors sent by their mistresses ( teachers ? ) and marked with the seal of their ring, they explain him ( her ? ) the motives for this sending.

King accepts the present of one of them who ( which ? ), by this fact, is informed about its choice.

Some kings, by scruple or by condolence, take aphrodisiac, to be able to serve several wives in the same night. Others, on the contrary, unite only with those who they prefer and abandon the others. Most give to each its tour.
